How to Begin a Home Renovation Project

Here are 5 steps to help you get started on your home improvement adventure.

You love your home but it needs help. Maybe the layout is all wrong, or there isn’t enough storage, or your large family has outgrown the space. Whatever the challenge, a home renovation is a great way to improve a space you already love.

But, the process can be as overwhelming as it is exciting. How do you create a plan, choose a renovation company, and begin? We came up with 5 steps to help you get started on your home improvement adventure.

5 Steps for Starting Your Home Renovation

1. Assess your needs and goals

Take a close look at your home and identify any areas that require attention. Do you need more space, better functionality, or a fresh new look? Are there any structural or safety issues that need to be addressed? Is kitchen renovation your top priority?

If these questions are already overwhelming you, try starting the process like this: Walk through your home and create a list of likes and dislikes about each space, then ask yourself what changes are most important to you. After that, you might gather inspiration through online resources like Pinterest so you can visualize the result you want.

Once you have a clear understanding of what you want to achieve, you'll be better equipped to communicate your vision to your home renovation contractor.

2. Create a budget

Creating a budget is essential to avoid overspending and ensure that you're getting the most value for your investment. Start by looking at your finances and determining how much you can afford to spend on a renovation project. Consider how much you have saved and how much you could borrow if necessary.

Next, review all aspects of the renovation you have in mind, and calculate a rough total. Try to break down your budget into specific items so you can allocate funds accordingly. For instance, if you're renovating your kitchen, you'll need to budget for items such as cabinets, appliances, countertops, and flooring. Once you have selected a renovation company, they can help you come up with more exact figures. And, remember that it’s always a good idea to leave some wiggle room for unexpected expenses or changes to the project scope. Set aside an extra 10-20% of your budget to account for unforeseen expenses.

3. Research renovation companies

Researching renovation companies can help you find a team who is reputable and specializes in the type of project you’re interested in. Start by going online and reading reviews from previous clients to get an idea of the quality of their work and customer service. It's also important to check that the company is licensed and insured to protect yourself from any liabilities that may arise during the project. For example, in Ontario, you can check a company’s insurance coverage through the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board. You might also ask if they are certified by Skilled Trade Ontario,

Scheduling consultations with at least three contractors can help you compare quotes and discuss your vision for the renovation. This also gives you a better idea of the cost and timeline of the project and enables you to make an informed decision. At the same time, pay attention to how well different companies communicate– are they clear and reliable? This will go a long way once the project gets started.

4. Start planning the renovation

Once you've selected a contractor for your home renovation project, the planning process typically involves working closely with them to create a detailed plan that meets your needs and budget. This may involve several consultations and discussions to determine factors such as the project's scope, materials to be used, and overall design aesthetics. You might decide to expand or cut down your renovation goals, depending well your budget and project total align.

The contractor will conduct a site visit to assess the space and any potential obstacles or challenges that may need to be addressed during the renovation process. They will work with you to create a design plan that incorporates your desired style and preferences, while also ensuring that the renovation is structurally sound and compliant with local building codes. Your contractor will also create a timeline for the project that takes into account any necessary permits and material ordering.

5. Prepare your home for renovation

Preparing your home for renovation is crucial to ensure a successful renovation process. This involves clearing out the renovation area and protecting nearby furniture and belongings. Discussing any special considerations with your contractor, such as keeping pets and children safe and making adjustments to your daily routine, is also important. For example, you might request that they keep their working hours to when your children are at school or you’re at the office.

For major renovations, such as a whole-home renovation or an addition, you may need to make temporary living arrangements. This could mean staying with family or friends or renting temporary living space.

Establish clear lines of communication with your contractor from the outset and have a plan for addressing any questions or concerns that arise during the process. Make sure you have a way to reach your contractor easily and establish a schedule for regular check-ins to ensure that the project is progressing smoothly.

Home renovation can be a complex and involved process, but with careful planning and preparation, you can achieve the results you desire. By assessing your needs and goals, creating a budget, researching renovation companies, planning the renovation, and preparing your home for the work ahead, you'll be well on your way to a successful renovation. Remember to communicate openly with your contractor throughout the process, and enjoy watching your home transform into the space of your dreams.
